What is PayPal?

Paypal.com is the most secure method of accepting credit card payments over the internet that we have found. When you click on an item’s shopping cart in our store, a new window will pop up showing your shopping cart contents. When you are ready to check out with your purchases, click the ‘check out’ button in the new window. There will be a series of questions, typical of any online credit card transaction, and then you will be asked for your credit card number. It’s that simple.

Can I buy something for my Secret Pal?  Can you keep a secret?

You bet!  We're excellent at keeping secrets!  Whether it's a block-of-the-month (BOTM) or a fat quarter or a pincushion, we'll send your gift to your Secret Pal with no reference to you.  Simply let us know when placing your order.  We'll include a gift card which states the items are from a Secret Pal (or Secret Sister, or ??).

What does BOTM mean?  Block-of-the-Month

What does In-A-Bag mean?  A 3CrazyLadies quilt kit. Kits include pattern and fabrics necessary to construct the quilt top only (unless otherwise noted, backing, batting, and binding fabrics sold separately).

What is a Fat Quarter?  Fabric measuring 18" x 22"

What is a Fat Eighth?  Fabric measuring 9" x 22"

What is a half-square triangle?  A square block consisting of two right triangles, pieced along their diagonals.

What is the standard seam allowance for quilting?  ¼"

What kind of thread should I use?

We always use 100% mercerized cotton thread, along with 100% cotton fabric and 100% cotton batting. Benefits include the fact that since it is cotton rather than polyester, in the event of a mishap, the thread will break before the cotton fabric tears. This makes quilt repair easier.

What color thread should I use?

For patchwork piecing, we use light or medium gray, which works well with most fabric colors. Sometimes we use beige, when we have really light-colored fabrics or lots of cream-colored pieces. For machine quilting, we use either matching or contrasting colors, including variegated.

Should I pre-wash my fabric before sewing?

That’s the great debate. Benefits of NOT pre-washing: (1) the time factor, you can get started the minute you get in the door from the fabric shop; (2) if you wash it when it is all put together in the quilt, the effect after washing is that everything shrinks at the same time, making a prettier quilt; (3) some people think that the sizing in the fabric make it easier to work with, marking and both the rotary cutting and the piecing (this is particularly true when working with flannel). Benefits of pre-washing: (1) any shrinkage occurs before you’ve spent a lot of time making it into a quilt; (2) you are able to check the fabric for color-fastness.

How often should I change my sewing machine needle?

If you’re working nonstop for several hours, the rule of thumb is to change your needle every 8 hours of use. If you aren’t a round-the-clock stitcher, a good rule of thumb is to change your needle for each new project. Using an old/dull needle may damage your fabric or sewing machine and will result in skipping stitches.

Why use a rotary cutter instead of scissors?

Not only can you get 100% precise cuts/shapes, you can cut several layers at the same time. We have several different sizes of rotary cutters and blades available.

What is a good general reference book for quilters?

We Crazy Ladies have used The Quilters Ultimate Visual Guide from Rodale Press, Inc. for years and swear by it. It’s available for purchase on our webstore bookshelf (if you don't see it, we are currently out.  But let us know and we can place a rush order...it's that good of a book!).
